Tuckabatchee (March-April 2006)
This was intended to be a ride from Vincennes IN to Tuckabatchee in Alabama. There were two subjects to this ride. The first was Tecumseh and the War of 1812. Tecumseh had gone to Tuckabatchee in 1811 as part of a campaign to built a pan-Indian confederation to resist the Americans. But that location was also near the places that Nate Shaw (real name Ned Cobb) had told about in the oral history that was published as All God’s Dangers, by Theodore Rosengarten (1975).
The ride didn’t work out exactly as intended. By the time I got across the Alabama border along the Natchez Trace, I realized I wouldn’t have enough time to ride to Tuckabatchee and visit all the places I wanted to visit in the area of Montgomery, Wetumpka, Dadeville, and Notasulga. So we spent a day visiting some Tecumseh sites in Mississippi by car, then drove to Selma where I resumed the bike ride.
Before agreeing to do this trip, Myra had reminded me that I still hadn’t taken her anywhere that had palm trees. So we included a couple of days near the mouth of the Apalachicola River. I put the bicycle on the ground on St George Island long enough to make my mileage goal for the two-week outing: 720
