This was the final ride of a four day outing in the Lafayette, Indiana area in August 2008.  See “Prophetstown base camp (August 2008).”

One of the major intermediate goals for the day was to visit the site of the Cicott trading post along the Wabash River.   After that I went to Fountain County to look at a couple of places where settlers were said to have gathered for safety at the time of a false Indian scare in 1826.

The greenish line shows the day’s route to a place east of Covington.   In a couple of places where it seems to cut diagonally across fields instead of crossing the road, it’s because I don’t know exactly which roads I took there.  One of these places is near the end of the ride, and the other was just after leaving Attica.

Cicott Trading Post park on Independence Road

The Zechariah Cicott trading post site is near Independence on the Wabash River.   There is now a park there, with a picnic shelter.

Elizabeth Cicott gravestone in the Independence Cemetery.

North of Independence, on the N Independence-Pine Village Road, is the cemetery where Zechariah Cicott and his second wife, Elizabeth, are buried.   More about this gravestone, and the meaning of the term “consort” is at Consort, posted May 13.

The below photos are from these and other stops on this ride.
