  Decrepitude

  It's just a random old silo and a random abandoned farmstead within a couple hour's ride from home. It's a monument to an era and a way of life that is gone, but which has still left traces on the landscape. Why do I like to take photos of old, decrepit things? I'm not sure. But the last several days have been a reminder of approaching decrepitude for myself.   First day in Ireland

  I'm one of those strange people who likes looking at other peoples' vacation photos. But what I'm looking at may seem strange. I am curious about driveways in other parts of the world. And I like to see what the edges of the road are like. What is it like where pavement meets ditch? If there is no pavement and no ditch, well, what does it look like where the roads transition to farm fields, or whatever? I don't feel I understand a place until I know about that.   Fully Loaded Touring Bicycles

  A couple of links from phredders for future reference: "Fully Loaded Touring Bicycles - On Tour" Unfortunately, I don't think I have a single photo of my bike with fully-loaded panniers that would meet the qualifications for this gallery. I have this one from 1999, with an old set of panniers and bags that I no longer use, but I don't think it's up to the standards of that site.   Golden Ring of Russia cycle tour

  I've never gone on an organized bicycle tour with other people.    Except for one ride to Ohio with my youngest son in June 2000, I've always ridden by myself.  I think I would enjoy an organized tour with other riders, but I like the way I go touring with my wife better.  (She goes by car, I go by bicycle.) Here is one organized tour I'd definitely like to go on, though.   It's run by something called the Russia Cycle Touring Club.   Ellen and Bob, who did one of this year's tours, have photos and descriptions here.   Bicyclists and dogs

  Bicyclists have a conflicted relationship with dogs.   But here is one I hadn't seen before.  It's from blogger Jill, who describes herself as "an Alaska journalist who likes to bicycle in horrendous conditions and eat goldfish crackers and Pepsi for breakfast."   It's an old, "Which kind of dog am I" article for bicyclers.   It looks like I'm somewhat of a mutt.
