We checked into a motel in Wapakoneta late on August 29. There was just enough time for me to get in a brief starter ride, shown in green on the above Google map. I decided that a reachable destination before dark was a small piece of road that follows the old boundary of the Wapakoneta [...]

Four Ohio counties

Four Ohio counties

Fort Loramie is a good place to use as a base camp. It’s an old canal town. There are no B&Bs and no chain motels, but there is a Ma ‘n Pa type motel, the Dairy King Motel. To register we walked up to the same sidewalk window where we later got an ice cream. The room is clean, spacious, and inexpensive.

Broken log building in Clay Township, Auglaize County

Broken log building in Clay Township, Auglaize County

On my August 30 ride from Wapakoneta to Fort Loramie and Piqua, I first did a detour to the east. In Clay Township I came across a tumbledown log building. It didn’t appear to be an old building that went back to settlement days, but I wondered if there was any interesting history associated with [...]

Greenville Treaty line to Loramie's Store

Greenville Treaty line to Loramie’s Store

Three years ago I did a ride to Logan County, Ohio, purposely routing it to a couple of small pieces of road that follow the line of the Greenville Treaty of 1795. On Saturday I rode from Wapakoneta to Fort Loramie to Piqua, this time not so much crossing the Greenville Treaty line but following [...]

Renewing acquaintances with a shade tree

Renewing acquaintances with a shade tree

We’re staying in Wapakoneta, Ohio, over the Labor Day weekend. It’s the starting location for some bike rides. I’ve been through Wapakoneta twice before, once in 1985 on my way to DeGraf, and once last year. Each time I rode from here to the southeast, and that’s what I did last night and today, too. [...]

Bridge over the Auglaize

Bridge over the Auglaize

This is the bridge over the Auglaize River, on the southeast edge of Buckland, OH.    Fort Amanda is just a few miles to the north, along this same river.   But I haven’t been able to find any references to this section of the river having been a major transportation route at the time of [...]

Wapa farm near Wapakoneta

Wapa farm near Wapakoneta

I was riding from Buckland to Wapakoneta, along the east side of the Auglaize River, when I came across this barn. I wondered if the owner knew how appropriate it was that it was a white barn. (It seems that white is the predominant color for barns in all the parts of Ohio where I’ve been.)
