  The first time I rode southwest from Niles, Michigan along Black Hawk's old trail, was in 1997 or 1998. I had sampled some of the Sauk Trail in Michigan (US-12) and found the road in poor repair -- not pleasant to ride on in many places. Much of it has since been resurfaced, and is much better to ride on now. But back then, I was glad to find that here was a piece of Black Hawk's old road that was such a pleasant place to ride -- there wasn't a lot of traffic ...

  Terre Coupee

  Terre Coupee, Indiana, is a village now called Hamilton. It's on the old Sauk Trail. Here the roadsigns say "Chicago Trail." It would be one of my favorite places to ride, even if it wasn't in Black Hawk's footsteps. Terre Coupee is one of the places where settlers gathered for mutual protection during the Black Hawk war. But I don't know if the actual location was here, or a little ways east of town. Some maps show another place called Terre Coupee, two miles south of here, along the railroad tracks. But ...

  Farrand Bridge

  More from Sunday's ride. This photo is from the bridge across the St. Joseph river on Farrand Road. The remains of a previous bridge can be seen in the background. Last time I was here (June 2007) some Amish fisherman were pulling their boat out of the water next to the bridge. The first time I was here, in June 1996, I stopped briefly and looked at those older bridge abutments, wondering about the history. I had read my first book about Black Hawk and was planning to stop in between ballgames at some Black Hawk places ...
