I am Shawnee, and part of the problem that the white settler women had after being with our women, was that they were again no more than chattle. Oue village chief, were women. They controlled the trade between tribes, they had equal say on council. In short, the Shawnee put their women on a pedistal. Some were quite tough and could hold their own, in most situations.

Settlers women, had NO say in what was traded, how the town governments were organized or ran. I cannot speak for how the white men, who were white Indians, were treated, or just how much input they would have had in government, since the WOMEN had a big part in appointing some one for consideration for a governmental position. However, our constitution was verry explicid on just who could become Nations Head Man (chief), or War Leader (War Chief.)
