Monday I was oblivious of all the excitement over the defeat of the bailout package in the House of Representatives. I was on an 80+ mile bike ride and didn’t hear about it until we turned on the radio on our way home. This scene was a few miles from my final destination of Upper Sandusky. Rain was showing in the west, but it held off long enough for me to finish the ride.
The bike is still on the car and I forgot to get the exact mileage before I put it up there. But my average speed for the day was over 13 mph when I arrived in Upper Sandusky. That’s very fast for me these days. I usually don’t even bother to look at my speed any more, but I knew I was riding faster than usual, thanks to the wind that was mostly at my back for the last 3/4 of the ride. The wind did pretty much what AccuWeather said it would do.
Here are the results:
-
Thursday – 20 miles – starter ride in the vicinity of Fort Loramie, where we stayed
-
Friday – 69 miles – ending at Urbana in Champaign County
-
Saturday – 42 miles – ending at Greenville on the old treaty grounds
-
Sunday – 44 miles – ending at a glacial esker site in Champaign County
-
Monday – 80+ miles – ending at Upper Sandusky
The more important results, i.e. the history stops, will have to wait for another time.

Sounds like you and I ride about the same pace. Both of my boys have turned into go-fast riders, although they are kind enough to turn it down when they’re with me.
I remember how on my tour of the Midwest League back in 1996 I started off by riding the 60 miles to the Indiana border, averaging 16mph. I’ve done that ride several times since then, but never at 16mph. My bike is older now, so it’s probably the bike’s fault.
Hi John,
I just checked in and see you made it to Upper Sandusky. You take some great shots with your camera. How about one of you on your bike? Your comments on the different sites are very interesting. I see a book in the making and appreciate your creative thought. Thanks for sharing the fire.
Hi, Hal. It’s good to hear from you again. This time I didn’t do much more than ride to Upper Sandusky, but I like to make at least my first visit to a place one that’s by bicycle. Sometime we may go there again and visit some of the historic places.
I’m glad you like the photos. Unfortunately I don’t have one of myself on my bike except for one my wife took at the start of my very first tour in 1995. I sometimes think that I should put myself in some of my photos, but I usually forget all about that while I’m on a ride.
