This weekend I did a two-day ride, mostly so I could visit some historic sites in Porter Township, Cass County, Michigan. I didn’t need to carry my gear. Myra drove and camped with me, near Bristol, Indiana. We went out for breakfast together this morning before I started riding again. She picked me up late in the afternoon. Mileage report: 76 miles yesterday, 40+ miles today.

I did something here I haven’t done for a long time — marked my route on a map while it’s still fresh in my mind. This time I did it on a Google Map. I guess it works well enough.

This was my last photo for the day, taken on Patterson Hill Road in Newburg Township. Not all of Cass County is rolling like this, but the southeast part of that county is a good place to find this kind of road.

Late edit:  I take it back.  That photo is not the last one of the day, and it was not taken on Patterson Hill Road.  Instead it was taken on Born Street.  But at least I got the township right.

  1. John,

I have to say it again, you have such a cool blog! I always enjoy it when I come on here. As I might have mentioned before, Cass County MI has a special place in my heart so it was nice to see the photo. I’m familiar with the southern half of the county on over to Niles. Interesting turf.

And with that kind of mileage, you must be in excellent shape! I ran a marathon in May, but running has sort of taken a back seat for awhile, and I miss it. But riding through this open country must be a total blast.

  2. Hi, Erik. Thanks for the kind words again. And I’m glad to see you posting more things on Amish America again.

As for being in shape, the actual body shape is not so good. I’ve gained back a lot of the weight I lost when I first started doing these long-distance rides, back in 1995. Unfortunately, my legs are now strong enough to carry it, but I can tell that it does slow me down a bit. Maybe as I get older and weaker I’ll have to revert to 1995 form.
