Mosquito country

Monroe County, Michigan makes me think of bad roads and deep ditches. This photo was taken on a 3-day tour that took me there in 2003. But now when I look at the road, I have to say it’s no worse than a lot of those in my home county of Calhoun this year, especially after the damage done last winter.

To show how deep those drainage ditches are, I suppose I should go there with my camera earlier in the year before the grass is so tall.

Most of Monroe County is in an old Lake Erie lakebed. The land couldn’t be farmed until it could be drained, but when it was it was some of the nation’s most productive. So I don’t have many stories from the 1830s to tie to specific farm locations in that county.

The land still is productive of mosquitos. With the heavy rains we’ve had this year, I don’t think I want to camp there just now.
