After crossing I-80 and the Fawn River, it wasn’t far to Cedar Lake. The trees on the horizon to the right of the road are in the low ground around Cedar Lake. The trees on the horizon to the left are along a little creek that drains the area into the Fawn River.
Cedar Lake was one of the places where settlers started to build a fort during the Black Hawk war, on account of a practical joke gone bad.
The fort was supposedly built on an island in the lake, probably now covered by water due to a dam that has raised the water level. It still doesn’t make a lot of sense to me that the settlers would pick an island in a low spot as a place for defense.
Here I’m on the north-south road (CR 250E) on the west side of the lake. These Holsteins don’t appear to be impressed by the honor of grazing in a place of such historical significance.
